SAFETEA-LU Truck Parking Programs

The Safe, Accountable, Flexible, and Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU) law authorized $25M for a pilot program to address the shortage of long term parking for commercial motor vehicles on the National Highway System (NHS). Two large-scale ITS based projects are being advanced through the program, one in California [I-5] and one on the East Coast [seven states, I-95]. Another five programs were awarded funding in FY2010: Utah, Mississippi, Oregon, Tennessee and Pennsylvania. A Federal Register Notice soliciting applications was issued in fall 2010, and awards were made in FY2011 to Michigan and Minnesota totaling close to $6.5M. In 2011 a total of 31 applications requesting $61M in Truck Parking Program funds were received. Five projects, to Indiana, Missouri, Utah, West Virginia, and Wyoming, were awarded through this process. The latest round of Truck Parking Pilot Program funds were awarded in FY2012 to six projects in California, Colorado, Maryland, Michigan, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. These awards total $5.3M. The Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century law, signed into law in 2012, discontinued the Truck Parking Pilot Program.
