NEW YORK: Drive Smart Mobile Technology Pilot Program
Drive Smart is a New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) consumer technology project that uses data drawn from a car"s on-board diagnostics port (OBD-II) to help New York City drivers save money, save time, and drive more safely. Drive Smart provides a suite of services and mobile applications to drivers–provided by private sector partners–that incentivize safe driving and environmentally efficient travel choices. Participants will be able to enroll in a usage-based insurance (UBI) program offered by a leading national insurer, receive incentives for driving during less congested times or on less congested routes, and get feedback on how safely they are driving and their actual cost of car ownership. NYCDOT will also use Drive Smart data to learn more about accidents in order to support the implementation of Vision Zero, New York City's street safety initiative. NYCDOT will launch a Drive Smart pilot program with 400 volunteer drivers in 2015.
