Dear Mr. Chairman:

This letter transmits the Vermont Pilot Program Report as requested in the fiscal year (FY) 2010 Consolidated Appropriations Act.

Section 194 of the FY 2010 Consolidated Appropriations Act authorized a 1-year pilot program through December 17, 2010. This program allowed Vermont and Maine to apply State truck weight limits on the Interstate System in those States. The Act requires the U.S. Department of Transportation to prepare a report on the impacts of the program on highway safety, bridge and road durability, commerce, truck volumes, and energy use within the State of Vermont. The enclosed report was prepared by Federal Highway Administration staff, along with staff of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the Vermont Agency of Transportation, and responds to the request for a 1-year report.

An identical letter has been sent to the Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Appropriations; the Chairman and Ranking Member of the Senate Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies; the Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Committee on Appropriations, and the Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies.
