NHI Certificate in Work Zone Safety

The NHI Certificate Program features suites of complementary NHI courses bundled together to enable participants to enhance their knowledge and expertise in specific disciplines or topic areas. The NHI Certificate of Accomplishment in Work Zone Safety provides best practices to help practitioners design, operate, and maintain highway work zones that improve safety for workers and the driving public.

Strategies for Developing Work Zone Traffic Analyses (FHWA-NHI-133110)

This no-cost, interactive, web-based training provides an overview of how traffic analysis tools can be applied specifically to work zone analysis problems. The course provides information on the constraints and opportunities of work zone analysis associated with available transportation modeling approaches. It also builds familiarity with the various work zone factors influencing the selection of a transportation modeling approach. Finally, it provides the participants with practical experience in developing a transportation modeling approach in a collaborative process that considers issues ranging from work zone characteristics, performance measurement, technical risk assessment, and resource constraints. Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to characterize a work zone and select and justify a transportation modeling approach based upon the work zone characterization.

Maintenance Training Series (FHWA-NHI-134109)

This no-cost, web-based training series includes 11 self-paced courses that each take approximately 1 hour to complete. In addition to a course on the Basics of Work Zone Traffic Control, course topics include: Pavement Preservation Programs, Shoulders and Shaping, Thin HMA Overlays and Leveling, Base and Subbase Stabilization and Repair, Drainage, Outdoor Advertising and Litter Control, Roadside Vegetation Management, Weather-related Operations, Underground Storage Tanks, and Cultural and Historic Preservation. The courses are designed for State, county, or regional agency personnel who manage transportation maintenance and operations programs and handle oversight, quality assurance, materials, scheduling, budgeting, or planning.

Maintenance of Traffic for Technicians (FHWA-NHI-133117)

This five-hour, no-cost, web-based training presents information about the placement, field maintenance, and inspection of traffic control devices; drafting work zone traffic control plans; and flagging. The training is broken into five modules: General Terms and Procedures; Traffic Channelizing and Control Devices; Traffic Control Zones; Flagger Operations; and Traffic Control Zone Operations. The training was prepared by the Transportation Curriculum Coordination Council (TCCC) in partnership with NHI and is recommended for the TCCC levels I and II.

Maintenance of Traffic for Supervisors (FHWA-NHI-13317)

This five-hour, no-cost, web-based training presents information about the placement, field maintenance, and inspection of traffic control devices; drafting work zone traffic control plans; and flagging. The training focuses on the design of a traffic control plan, and how and why one needs to operate and implement traffic control in a work zone, and has five modules: Fundamental Principles of Temporary Traffic Control Zones; Temporary Traffic Control Devices; Traffic Control Zones; Transportation Management Plans; and Flagger Operations. The training was prepared by the Transportation Curriculum Coordination Council (TCCC) in partnership with NHI and is recommended for the TCCC levels III and IV.

Advanced Work Zone Management and Design (FHWA-NHI-133115)

This three-day training course provides participants with advanced levels of knowledge and competencies in work zone design and management practices including work zone planning, project phasing and scheduling, design, contracting, transportation management plans, speed management, monitoring safety and mobility, and more. The course includes practical hands-on exercises in groups. This course is intended for those that understand the principles of engineering judgment and studies, have considerable management or design experience in work zone traffic control, and have an understanding of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. The target audience is State and local design engineers, traffic and safety engineers, senior work zone traffic engineers, transportation planners, employees/board members of metropolitan planning organizations, regional planners, regional construction engineers (with work zone experience), and senior engineering technicians.
