National Highway Freight Network (NHFN) Visualization Tool

The 2015 Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act established the National Highway Freight Network (NHFN) to strategically direct Federal resources and policies toward improved performance of the NHFN. The NHFN consists of four subsystems of roadways: the Primary Highway Freight System (PHFS), all Interstates not on the PHFS, the Critical Urban Freight Corridors, and the Critical Rural Freight Corridors. More detail can be accessed at the FHWA NHFN website.

Note: FHWA updates the NHFN Visualization Webtool, GIS shapefiles, and tables annually and continues to maintain the NHFN as it changes, in accordance with the HPMS submission cycle. However, these changes may not be reflected immediately. The last update to the data in the above visualization tool, the GIS shapefiles, and the Excel tables was March 2023.
