Work Zone Mobility and Safety Program

Acknowledgments

The project team is grateful to the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) for committing their time and resources towards the success of this example project write-up. The topic of comprehensive work zone impacts assessment is relatively new to most practitioners, and Caltrans' policies and practices in this area are some of the most innovative in the Nation. We are fortunate to have obtained information on a project from Caltrans to demonstrate the application of the work zone impacts assessment process to an example project.

Specifically, the project team would like to recognize the following Caltrans personnel and thank them for their assistance:

  • Jacqui Ghezzi, P.E., Caltrans Headquarters Office of System Management and Operations.
  • Albert M. Lee, P.E. & T.E., Branch Chief, Caltrans District 6, Office of Traffic Operations.
  • Jose D. Fernandez, Jr., P.E., Caltrans District 6, Office of Traffic Operations.
  • Boris Ayaviri, P.E., Design Engineer (Senior), Caltrans Branch V of Project Development Division Design II.
  • Chris Gardner, P.E., Project Engineer, Caltrans Branch V of Project Development Division Design II.
  • Mark Mengoni, P.E., Project Resident Engineer, Caltrans District 6 Construction.

Mr. Jose D. Fernandez, Jr. served as the primary liaison between the project team and Caltrans and provided us a wealth of information related to the SR 41 project, participated in several phone calls, and obtained additional information when needed. His overall understanding and knowledge about the SR 41 project, his timely contributions, and willingness to further the practice of work zone safety and mobility management were key to the successful compilation of this case study.
