Figure 4 is a compilation of three simulated graphics of a typical highway sections on I–35W in Minnesota. The first section shows the planned overhead signage for I–35W—with one sign over the priced dynamic shoulder lane (PDSL) showing the price ($1.00 in this graphic) and four variable speed limit signs over the four normal lanes. The second and third sections show what traffic on the highway is expected to look like when the PDSL is open and closed, respectively. When open, the PDSL is shown with normal vehicular traffic. When closed, the PDSL is shown empty with the exception of one motorcyclist.
