Description of Figure 12-2: Contraflow Operational Scenarios

This drawing is divided into four sections, each showing a type of contraflow operations.

Each section shows an overhead view of a section of highway with a median area and a shoulder, two travel lanes separated by a dashed line, and another shoulder on each side. The type of travel lane depends on the type of contraflow operation as follows:

  • Normal: Two inbound lanes on one side of the median and two outbound lanes on the other side
  • Normal Plus One Contraflow Lane: One inbound and one outbound lane on one side of the median and two outbound lanes on the other side
  • Normal with Shoulder and One Contraflow Lane: One inbound and one outbound lane on one side of the median and two outbound lanes plus the inside shoulder outbound on the other side
  • Normal Plus Two Contraflow Lanes: Two outbound lanes on each side of the median.
