Traffic Bottlenecks

Combating Bottlenecks

North Carolina

Prioritizing congestion-related projects to marshal resources sooner.

Background: Since the initial effort to identify the state's "top 10 bottlenecks" in 2006, North Carolina has expanded it's list to almost thirty statewide and has begun the process to prioritize projects in the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) to alleviate the congestion.

Bottleneck Project: NCDOT is in the process as an agency to re-define its mission, vision, goals and priorities to most efficiently use its resources to meet customer needs. A key product from this process will be completed in September 2007 at a "prioritization summit" where the near term priorities of NCDOT for projects, programs, and services will be presented. As part of our action plan, the division will continue to work with NCDOT to target congestion and identify appropriate projects to alleviate bottlenecks in the high priority areas of the state.
