Traffic Bottlenecks

Combating Bottlenecks

Maryland

Not all "low cost" congestion projects are actually low cost! This one is $75M to grade-separate Randolph Road at Georgia Avenue in Wheaton, MD.

Bottleneck Project: The federal share is $42.8M; state share is $17.6 M; and the county share is $14.4M to produce this project that is scheduled to open in 2017. The project will grade-separate one of the busiest intersections in Montgomery County, MD, nay, in the Washington D.C. region. The cost is driven up by these complexities: 1) the METRO Red Line runs under GA Ave nearby; 2) a volunteer fire station sits in the footprint of the intersection and will have to be relocated; 3) there are complex utility relocations under both roads; and 4) maintenance of traffic must be established, for this intersection moves 86,000 vehicles a day.
