Title:

Interstate Highway Crash Injuries During Winter Snow and Non-Snow Events

Abstract:

This paper compares crashes and injuries reported during winter snow events to those during equivalent winter non-snow events in Iowa. A significant increase was observed when winter snow event injury and non-injury crash rates were compared to equivalent winter non-snow injuries and crash rates. Another finding was that crashes during snow events were less injurious compared to equivalent non-snow event crashes. Snow event crash data were then analyzed to study the effects of storm-specific characteristics on injury occurrence. Includes review of past literature.
