Description

This drawing shows two lanes and shoulders of one direction of a divided highway. Several merge and speed limit signs are shown beginning more than 1 mile in advance of the merge point where channelizing devices are placed across the left lane:

  • The first sign is shown on each shoulder 7,920 feet in advance of the merge point; the sign states "Use both lanes to merge point."
  • The next sign is shown on each shoulder 5,280 feet in advance of the merge point; the sign states "Road work 1 mile."
  • The third set of signs is shown on each shoulder 2,640 feet in advance of the merge point; a sign states "Left lane closed one-half mile" above a plaque stating "50 m.p.h."
  • A changeable message sign also is shown on the right shoulder 2,640 feet in advance of the merge point.
  • The fourth set of signs is shown on each shoulder 1,500 feet in advance of the merge point; a sign states "Left lane closed 1500 ft" above a plaque stating "45 m.p.h."
  • The fifth set of signs is shown on each shoulder 1,000 before the merge point; a sign states "Left lane closed 1000 ft" above a plaque stating "40 m.p.h."
  • The sixth set of signs is shown on each shoulder 550 feet in advance of the merge point; a lane merge symbol sign is above a plaque stating "40 m.p.h.
  • The seventh set of signs is shown on each shoulder 350 feet in advance of the merge point; the sign states "Merge here, take your time."
  • At the merge point, a flashing arrow board is shown on the left shoulder at the point where channelizing devices begin to cross the left lane at an angle until reaching the broken line between the two lanes.
