Title:

Using Friction Measurements to Gauge Winter Maintenance Performance

Abstract:

Researchers located information on whether friction measurements are realistic, effective and reliable winter maintenance performance indicators, with an emphasis on how transportation agencies are using friction measurements to assess road conditions. They identified several U.S. and foreign highway agencies that are using or investigating friction measurements in winter maintenance operations or performance measurement. They also present five State DOTs' Experiences with a friction measurement device, and several U.S. and International Research reports on friction measurement.
