Abstract:

This document provides a summary of surface transportation weather research activities that are necessary to support and advance Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) designed to improve transportation safety, capacity, and efficiency. This report satisfies one of the obligations of the Intelligent Transportation Society of America (ITSA) Weather Information and Applications Special Interest Group (WIA-SIG) Project titled Surface Transportation Weather Research Program, which was initiated in August 2004. The paper describes research needs related to weather and surface condition sensors, data integration, standards, vehicle-based sensing, in-vehicle weather information, transportation network modeling, human factors, decision support systems, detection and prediction, and the benefits of weather information.
