Title:

Surface Transportation Weather Workshop

Abstract:

The University of North Dakota Surface Transportation Weather Research Center hosted the first National Workshop on Surface Transportation Weather in August 2004, at the University of North Dakota campus in Grand Forks. The primary goal of the workshop was to facilitate an open dialogue between transportation and weather professionals, and to address current and future operational issues. Nearly 100 individuals, including several people via webcast teleconferencing, participated in the workshop and represented a wide spectrum from the public, private, and academic sectors. The workshop adopted a fast-paced format featuring short oral presentation sessions followed by more extensive breakout discussions, with the intent to facilitate focused discussions. The oral sessions focused on three theme areas: (1) Need for and Use of Weather in DOT Operations, (2) Weather Elements within ATIS, and (3) Converting a National Vision into Reality. This report includes workshop proceedings and a synthesis of key issues.
