Title:

Road Surface Condition Sensing Algorithm by using Fuzzy Inference for Laser Radar System

Abstract:

This paper describes development of a road condition sensing system employing fuzzy inference in basic algorithm of AHS. The system detects condition with laser radar sensor, supplies information to vehicles using road-to-vehicle communication to improve safety. Results indicate that sensor can detect 7 conditions including dry, wet, water film, new snow, compacted snow, slush, frozen compacted snow, and ice film. System can be used to detect snow layer thickness or ruts for timely maintenance.
