Title:

Alaska's RWIS: Unique Deployment in a Rural Environment

Abstract:

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (ADOT&PF) is deploying a statewide RWIS netowrk as part of their regional ITS architecture. Rural Alaska presents considerable challenges to a RWIS deployment: limited access to communications and power, extreme weather and environmental conditions, and long distances from services to support RWIS sites. These challenges have lead to use of innovative procurement and deployment strategies and formation of partnerships with other agencies in power, communication, data collection and sharing, and web dissemination. These unique methods have enabled ADOT&PF to reduce costs, increase efficiency and maximize usefulness of the RWIS.
