Modeling to Predict Bridge-Pavement Temperature for Winter Maintenance Decision

Abstract:

Hokkaido is the northernmost island of Japan, and with wintertime comes the potential for icy, slippey roadways, which result in negative effects on the vehicular traffic performance on roadways. This presents a significant potential determinant to traffic-congestion and accident. Road authorities attempt to provide as good winter roadway condition as possible through various snow and ice control activities to prevent snow or ice from bonding to road surface. In order to strategically provide those activities, it is required implementing an effective winter maintenance decision support system. Especially, bridges need more attention because those have a history of higher percentage of winter accidents than roadways, likely due to different pattern of pavement temperature between bridges and roadways. Therefore, in order to enable more effective winter maintenance through accurate forecasts of bridge pavement conditions, this study explores the bridge-pavement temperature prediction by applying a heat-balance model. The significant features of this model are to consider heat transfer at the bottom of bridge deck and to concern the influence of the running vehicles. Then, the study verifies the model performance with observed pavement temperature data. Preliminary result shows that the value of Root Mean-Square Error for the predicted pavement temperature at the top surface is 1.2 degree Celsius and at the bottom surface is 0.8 degree Celsius.
