Best Practices for Road Weather Management Version 2.0

Title:

Minnesota Department of Transportation Statewide R/WIS Project

Abstract:

This report presents a case study of an Environmental Sensor System (ESS) implementation by Minnesota DOT and a vendor, using NTCIP standards. The project is sponsored by AASHTO, FHWA, ITE and NEMA. Seventy-six (76) ESS were installed and placed into operation using the NTCIP standards. The ESS were spaced on an approximate 60-kilometer grid throughout Minnesota. The communication with the existing devices was accommodated by connecting the ESS Central System to the central system server of these existing systems. The objectives of allowing other vendors to bid on future expansion projects and seamless integration of legacy systems were achieved. This report also described the lessons-learned by vendors, agencies, and consultants.
