Title:

Evaluating the Fixed Anti-Icing Spray System at the Interstate 215 Overpass/Exchange at 6200 South Street, Salt Lake City, Utah

Abstract:

In the winter months, the bridge at Interstate 215 Overpass/Exchange at 6200 South Street is one of the most dangerous sections of highway in the state of Utah. The bridge is highly susceptible to freezing while the road before and after the bridge is not. A anti-icing spray system was installed on the northbound side of the bridge and tested during winter 1997/1998. The accident rates of the treated northbound lanes were compared to rates of the untreated southbound lanes. Accident rates during winter 1997/1998 were also compared to accidents that occurred during the previous five years. Results indicated that the number of accidents was reduced by 64 percent.
