Title:

Development of a System to Support Driving Safety in Poor Visibility

Abstract:

From 1996 to 1998, we studied how visual guides, called "self-emitting delineators" can function best in cold, snowy regions. In 1999, delineators were installed to evaluate how well they could be seen and to analyze driver's eye movement. Based on results, we created a visual guidance system whereby the relevant facilities are controlled according to environmental conditions of the site. Brightness of the self-emitting delineators changes automatically to secure the best possible visibility. At the same time, the content and brightness of variable message boards change automatically, to guide drivers effectively.
