Title:
Water Film Thickness Measurement on Road Surfaces by Means of an Early Ice Warning Sensor
Abstract:
This paper describes the development and functions of the new Active Road/Runway Condition & Temperature of Ice formation Sensor. ARCTIS sensor, which measures the freezing point along with water film thickness and consumes even less energy than the GT sensor. The ARCTIS sensor manages not only to generate an early warning against black ice in winter, but it can even give warnings in case of aquaplaning. A patent is pending for the measuring method for determining water film thickness. With the knowledge of the water film thickness while determining the freezing point temperature is useful, it is possible to establish the thawing agent concentration in the liquid when the quantity of thawing agency per surface unit is known.
