Best Practices for Road Weather Management Version 2.0
Title:
Proactive Snow and Ice Control Toolbox
Abstract:
The current state of the practice of snow and ice control is building on the solid elemental foundation laid in the early 1990s by the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) and the winter maintenance international scanning tours conducted in 1994, 1998, and 2002. The state of the art has moved from reactive snow and ice control to a focus on proactive strategies. The proactive assault on winter is being launched simultaneously on three fronts: (1) Innovative interactive road weather information systems and anti-icing training lead by AASHTO, (2) Maintenance decision support systems (MDSS) lead by FHWA, and (3) Development and evaluation of the next-generation snow and ice control equipment led by a consortium of state DOTs with the Iowa DOT.
