Best Practices for Road Weather Management Version 2.0
Title:
ITS Project Reduces Evacuation Congestion
Abstract:
The South Central Planning Development Commission in south central Louisiana is working to significantly reduce regular congestion on Route 24 and stop the bottleneck effect that occurs during emergency evacuations. In an area where 1,500 square miles of coastline have eroded and hurricanes regularly occur, a bad storm and flood may have devastating effects. Every year, the region is more susceptible to storm damage and being able to evacuate the area efficiently is important. The ITS project consists of a fiber optic network of incident management units that are connected at all times. Computerized signals will connect emergency personnel for evacuations
