Best Practices for Road Weather Management Version 2.0
Title:
Clarus: The Nationwide Surface Transportation Weather Observing and Forecasting System
Abstract:
The U.S. DOT Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Road Weather Management Program, in conjunction with the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Joint Program Office, recognized that data from state-owned Environmental Sensor Stations (ESS) could be better utilized if they were standardized and made available from one location. The FHWA responded with a new initiative called "Clarus?the Nationwide Surface Transportation Weather Observing and Forecasting System". The objectives of Clarus are to reduce the impact of adverse weather for all road and transit users and operators by demonstrating an integrated road weather observation data management system, and to develop a partnership to establish a nationwide surface transportation observing and forecasting system.
