Best Practices for Road Weather Management Version 2.0
Title:
Automated Bridge Deicers in Minnesota
Abstract:
This paper discusses winter maintenance practices in Minnesota and describes bridge deicing systems on Trunk Highway (TH) 169 in northern Mn, I-35 near Duluth, TH61 at Dresbach, TH61 at Winona, and I-35 over the Mississippi River in Minneapolis. Snowplows are recalled when winds exceed 60 mph and wind chills approach -85 degrees F. For the 1998/1999 winter season, statewide salt and sand costs were $7.6M or $270 per lane/mile, representing 24% of total road operating costs. Use of anti-icing and prewetting techniques with truck-mounted road temperature sensors, 93 ESS sites by 2000-2001 season are discussed.
