Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) in Traffic Incident Management

Many urban areas now have Traffic Management Centers and have deployed detection, surveillance, and control equipment of their highways, especially on freeways, to assist in the management of traffic. These systems can be extremely valuable in managing traffic impacted by an incident. Traffic information is important to responders also, enabling them to reach an incident scene faster by a less congested route.

Using ITS systems for traffic incidents requires a "Concept of Operations" for addressing the special needs of incidents and these operational concepts must be developed with the collaboration of other responders, particularly those in public safety.
