Getting More by Working Together — Opportunities for Linking Planning and Operations

Exhibit 6: Benefits of Collaboration for Performance Measures

Exhibit 6 (description below)

Description:

This exhibit shows the benefits for planners and for operators when they collaborate in setting performance measures. For planners, collaboration (1) enables a more customer-oriented focus; (2) provides "real world" data that can be used to assess progress in meeting goals and objectives; (3) fosters greater consideration of the day-to-day functioning of the transportation network, which can help frame transportation plans; and (4) helps in prioritizing projects for funding.

For operators, collaboration (1) provides an opportunity to get involved in the planning process, and help shape system goals and objectives; (2) lends clarity to the role of operations in terms of the regional vision and goals; (3) directs attention to value of management and operations (M&O) strategies; and (4) elevates the status of M&O strategies in the transportation planning process.
