Figure 1 is a graphic of the relationship between total entering volume and intersection type. It has 4 different sized circles with the smallest at the top and the largest at the bottom indicating an increasing traffic volume. Each of the circles overlaps partially with the next circle. The topmost circle represents a typical signalized intersection; the next circle represents a large signalized intersection. The third circle represents an alternative intersection, and the large circle represents grade separation.
