Description At a cost as high as $4.8 million per track mile along complex segments, electrification via overhead catenary of the freight rail network may be cost prohibitive; the Association of American Railroads believes it is. Costs may be closer to $2 million per track mile for most segments, and the costs would be moderated by the benefits of electrification, including lower emissions.
