By 2040, long-haul freight truck traffic in the United States is expected to increase dramatically on the National Highway System (NHS). Forecast data indicate that truck travel may reach 590 million miles per day.

Long-haul freight trucks typically serve locations at least 50 miles apart, excluding trucks that are used in movements by mutliple modes and mail.
