12001 data are from the U.S. Department of Transportation, Research and Innovative Technology Administration, Bureau of Transportation Statistics, International Trade and Freight Transportation Trends (Washington, DC: 2003), tables 22 and C-11, available at www.bts.gov as of July 12, 2004. "Other" includes "flyaway aircraft" (i.e., aircraft moving from the manufacturer to a customer and not carrying any freight), vessels moving under their own power, pedestrians carrying freight, and miscellaneous.
22005 data are from the U.S. Department of Transportation, Research and Innovative Technology Administration, Bureau of Transportation Statistics, North American Freight Transportation (Washington, DC: 2003), tables A-1 and A-2, available at www.bts.gov as of July 18, 2008. Weights of export shipments by land modes are not collected in the administrative records that provide official U.S. trade data. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics has estimated the land mode export tonnage using value-to-weight ratios derived from imported commodities. Value-to-weight ratios for exported commodities may differ from imported commodities.
Notes:
1 short ton = 2,000 pounds. Mode "Other" includes shipments transported by mail, other and unknown modes, and shipments through Foreign Trade Zones. Totals for the most recent year differ slightly from the Freight Analysis Framework due to variations in coverage and FAF conversion of values to constant dollars. Numbers may not add to totals due to rounding.
