The classic forms of rail intermodal transportation, trailer-on-flatcar and container-on-flatcar, are spread throughout the Untied States.  The largest concentrations are on routes between the Pacific Coast ports and Chicago and between Chicago and New York.

U.S. map showing major flows of tons by trailer-on-flatcar and container-on-flatcar rail intermodal service from southern California to the Chicago one one route via Albuquerque and another route via Salt Lake City, with smaller flows from Seattle to Portland to Salt Lake City, from Seattle to Portland to Chicago, from Chicago to New York City via Albany, fron Chicago to New York City via central Pennsylvania, and from Georgia to Florida.
