Figure 3-12. Average Truck Speeds on Selected Interstate Highways: 2007

In addition to calculating peak-period congestion from traffic volumes, as shown in Figures 3-8 through 3-11, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) directly measures operating speeds and reliability on major truck routes by tracking more than 500,000 trucks.  Average truck speeds drop below 55 miles per hour near major urban areas, border crossings and gateways, and in mountainous terrain.
