Description of Figure 8-7: Schematic of I-15 Reversible Lanes

This drawing shows an overhead view of horizontal managed lanes and a head-on view of the same lanes, with drawings of cars, buses, and trucks shown in the lanes.

The overhead view is composed of the following, all shown with width dimensions:

  • Lanes labeled Main Lane Traffic with a left-pointing arrow (showing travel direction), a shoulder, fixed barrier, and another shoulder.
  • One lane labeled Managed Lane Traffic with a left-pointing arrow, a moveable barrier, and three lanes labeled Managed Lane Traffic with right-pointing arrows.
  • A shoulder area shown with a fixed barrier and crash cushions that is cut by entrance and exit lanes and a labeled Weave Lane. The shoulder area is shown with length dimensions.
  • Two lanes labeled Main Lane Traffic.

The head-on view shows, from left to right, a shoulder, four general purpose traffic lanes with head-on views of vehicles, a shoulder, and a fixed barrier on a retaining wall. The remaining lanes are shown slightly raised above these four lanes. They consist of a shoulder, one traffic lane with a head-on view of a vehicle, a moveable barrier, three traffic lanes with back views of vehicles, a shoulder, a fixed barrier, a shoulder, four general purpose traffic lanes with back views of vehicles, and a shoulder. All lanes are shown with width dimensions. The three lanes in direction and one in the other surrounding the moveable barrier are labeled a 3 + 1 configuration. These "managed lanes" can be reconfigured with the moveable barrier.
