This figure illustrates the relationship of configuration items (such as software and hardware components) to the various elements that take place during the system's life cycle to ensure that the item successfully provides its intended function. These are as follows:

• The test system tests the configuration item structure.
• The product definition defines the item structure.
• The support systems provide operations, training, etc. for the item structure.
• The production system replicates the item structure.
• The development system develops the item structure.
