Title:

Weather Training for Surface Transportation Agencies: Methods, Results and Comments from National Weather Service Training in Northern Arizona

Abstract:

As applied to NWS information utilized by surface transportation agencies, training combined with meteorologist interaction is an effective approach to improving the traveling public's and transportation employees' safety, while enhancing surface transportation efficiency. The NWS Weather Forecast Office in Flagstaff, Arizona has provided weather training to Arizona DOT managers, dispatchers and operators beginning in the fall of 1995. Attaining, understanding and applying weather information are the key ingredients of NWS/Transportation Agency training sessions. As a result of training sessions and increased professional partnership between ADOT and the NWS, information sharing across northern Arizona has increased noticeably. This paper describes training methods and results, and includes an outline of the training curriculum.
