Weather Information and Road Safety

Abstract:

Weather is one environmental risk factor that is known to affect crash rates. Weather-related crash costs in Canada are estimated to be approximately 1 billion dollars per year. This report desribes physical effects of weather, summarizes empirical research on this topic, discusses the role of weather information on driver adjustments and winter maintenance, and assesses the state of knowledge pertaining to the role of weather information provision in road safety improvement.
