Title:

Thermal Maps: Aid for De-icing

Abstract:

The benefits of the application of deicing chemicals to roads to remove ice and snow have long been accepted in terms of the reduction in accidents. Given finite resources, the high cost of actually treating ice and snow and the general concerns over environmental damage from deicing materials, it is perhaps unreasonable to treat a road every winter night 'just in case'. Consequently highway engineers have had to look to more sophisticated information technology and techniques to meet the challenge. Knowing where and when ice is likely to form and snow is likely to fall is the key to solving the problem of where and when to allocate often limited resources. This article discusses temperature variations, information systems, and thermal mapping.
