The Use of Selected Deicing Materials on Michican Roads: Environmental and Economic Impacts

Abstract:

This report analyzes the performance, environmental effects and economic costs of seven deicing materials including sodium chloride (road salt), calcium magnesium acetate (CMA), a potassium chloride product (CMS-B) patented by Motech, a patented corrosion-inhibiting salt (CG-90 Surface Saver), calcium chloride, a patented concrete road surface containing calcium chloride pellets (Verglimit), and sand.
