Title:

The Prediction of Ice Formation on Roads

Abstract:

The techniques and uses of thermal mapping are described, and results are presented from West Midlands County Council. A new graphical form of road danger warning is compared with traditional road danger warnings from Eldon Meteorological Office, using observations from a sensor site on M5/M6 interchange at Ray Hall. For 120 Nights during the winger of 1983-1984, 67 traditional road danger warnings were issued by the Meteorological Office, of which 57 percent were shown to be accurate by the council. The graphical computer model produced 31 road danger warnings during the same period, of which 85 percent were shown to be accurate. A questionnaire survey of available sensor systems was carried out, enabling a comparative assessment to be made.
