Title:

Road Weather Service System in Finland and Savings in Driving Costs

Abstract:

To improve the timeliness of winter maintenance activities, the Finnish National Road Administration has developed an automated information system that transmits actual and forecast weather and road surface information to road maintenance personnel. It was estimated that improved maintenance response would decrease accidents by three to 17 percent. The estimated cost savings due accident reductions, delay reductions and vehicle costs were $900,000 per year, $60,000 per year and $20,000 per year, respectively
