Title:

Real Time Forecasting of Hurricane Winds and Flooding

Abstract:

This report describes a real time hurricane wind and flood forecasting system developed to support emergency preparedness, evacuation and sheltering decisions in Louisiana. The hurricane storm threat includes winds and storm surge. It is well known that the hurricane threat varies greatly with storm track and intensity. Thus emergency preparedness, evacuation and sheltering decisions must be guided by storm specific information. While the ability to determine the hurricane wind and flooding threat was available and was currently being used, it had not been set-up to meet the requirements of a real time application. The project described in the report addresses this need for a real time capability to forecast single hurricane storms.
