Adverse Weather Impacts on National Highway Networks
Abstract:
This paper presents a quantitative analysis framework for estimating the operational impact, in terms of delay, of adverse weather events on travel in the U.S. Using the GIS and database tools, one can estimate travel delay and other relevant statistics at various resolutions. This study quantifies operational delays on all urban and rural freeways and principal arterials in the nation's highway system for 1999. This study attempts to quantify the extent of adverse weather such as fog, ice and snowstorms. This study focuses on the reduction of capacities and resultant delays caused by the aforementioned temporary weather events.
