Title:

I-90 Gate Operations System: Research Report

Abstract:

The Minnesota DOT and their partners developed a freeway management system for I-90 at interchange of I-90 and US 71 near Jackson, Minnesota. Mn/DOT used different techniques to close Interstate highways in the past including placement of barricades, piling of snow at entrance ramps, and using uniformed law enforcement. Currently Mn/DOT is using 65 manually operated gates to direct traffic off rural interchanges and prohibit access during unsafe driving conditions. The I-90 Automated Gate Operations System is comprised of four subsystems: traffic management, detection and sensor, communications, and control and monitoring through web site internet access and graphical user interface.
