Title:

Go Light with the Salt, Please: Developing Information Systems for Winter Roadway Safety

Abstract:

The FHWA has established an international, pooled-fund consortium to take the lead in setting and promoting an agenda for RWIS-related research and implementation. Known as Aurora, the consortium comprises transportation agencies, universities, and other organizations with a stake in improving winter roadway maintenance. Aurora's mission has taken on a new urgency. Recent research in Canada has spotlighted another, often overlooked benefit of anti-icing programs: less salt on the roadway results in less salt runoff into the adjoining environment. This article discusses the toxicity of anti-icing/deicing chemicals, anti-icing trategies, RWIS and ESS, the use of environmental data and the environment.
