Fog Warning System on Penn Turnpike Adjusts Speed based on Visibility

Abstract:

This article describes a 5.7 million dollar ITS installed on a section of the Pennsylvania Turnpike where a fatal pileup occurred in 2003. During the first day in automated mode, 93 activations due to poor visibility were recorded. The Turnpike will monitor driver compliance with warnings and dynamic speed limit.
