Effects of Variable Speed Limit Signs on Driver Behavior during Inclement Weather

Abstract:

On two-mile test roadway in Salt Lake Valley, Utah; vary speed limit based on visibility and traffic conditions using a weighted average algorithm and display via DMS. Resulting reduction in speed deviation, reduction in accident frequency, and increase in overall mean speed.
