Telework means bringing the job to the person rather than the person to the job. There are several options for bringing the work to the employee including working from their home or from another worksite location near their home such as a satellite office or telework office center.
Telework eliminates commuter trips and can result in decreased demand for office space if enough employees telework on a regular basis. It is also a creative way to add employee benefits while addressing your worksite's transportation needs.
It is important to coordinate with several departments within your company before implementing a telework program including Human Resources, Facilities, Computer Support, as well as any union groups that may be represented at the worksite. Most employers start with a small pilot program and expand participation once it is working efficiently.
Of course telework is not appropriate for all types of businesses and employees. However, there may be some employees at a worksite with work duties that are compatible with telework, such as writing, editing, data entry or research. Before implementing a telework program, it is important to determine the best candidates for working at home or other remote location.
