Providing free or partially subsidized parking for employees is actually providing an incentive to drive alone to work. By modifying or eliminating free parking, you can provide an incentive for employees to look for an alternative to driving alone. Establishing a fee for those who drive alone is one strategy. The fees collected for employee parking can be used to pay for commuter benefits such as fare subsidies or other incentives.
If employees already pay for parking, offer discounts for those who carpool or vanpool. Instituting a parking fee program can be very controversial, so make sure you have consulted with other departments such as Human Resources and any union representatives.
